Lets talk Video and Audio Tape Deterioration :

Lets talk Video and Audio Tape Deterioration :
th575BMFND
All video, ( VHS, VHS-c, Betamax, all Sony 8 variations, Mini DV ), and audio tape have a shelf life of around 12 to 15 years. This is if they are stored in a climate controlled environment and especially nowhere near any magnets such as the sizes of magnets used in speakers.
Once they are stored in the attic or garage those years tend to drop a bit because of the excessive changes in temperature.
What this means is the magnetic signal of the tape and the tape material itself start to deteriorate, getting brittle, possibly breaking, causing substantial losses in color, audio, and tracking.
If you have preserved memories on video or audio tape of Special birthdays, family gatherings, Christmas’s , and the list goes on and on, it is time to convert those memoriesvhs-vhsc-to-dvd-300x200 to either DVD, CD, or a Digital file that will allow you to archive your special memories on your computer, thQVQSO4JR
external hard drive, or the cloud for many years to come.

There are a few ways to do this:
1st You can have a professional company do the video to DVD or File conversion for you. There are numerous online companies, but be careful as to how they charge. You can also look into what companies are available in your hometown. (As a matter of fact this is what our company does, please give us a call.)
2nd: You can do it yourself. You will need a working playback deck or video camera, conversion software, and some type of capture device that will connect to your computer.
3rd : A DVD recorder/VHS combo deck. This allows you to transfer your VHS only directly to DVD. This can only be used for VHS or VHS-c if you have the adapter.

Taking care of your Home Media while Stalling to Convert them

Jpeg When you come across your home media, ( video or audio tape, photos, slides, negatives, along with 8 and 16mm film), while cleaning out attics, closets, garages, etc. the best thing to do is right then and there take them to a reputable company and get them converted to DVD or Digital File. But we all know that, “just ain’t gonna happen”. So here are a few hints how to keep your media stored until you get ready to convert them.

Storing your media under the proper conditions will reduce deterioration of your items. All of your media should be stored in a clean, cool, dark environment. Avoid heat, humidity and light as these will deteriorate your media formats a lot quicker and will make them unviewable.

Great Places in your home to Store your Media:
Closets are low in humidity, have stable temperature, and have virtually no light. IMG_5186

Under a bed will always be dark and cool.

Avoid:
Laundry Room or other small spaces used to store household chemicals.
Attics
are not climate controlled and temperatures tend to fluctuate all day long.
Garage the garage tends to be dirty and has an unregulated temperature also. In addition, automobile exhaust and lawn chemical and fertilizer stored in the garage can create a hazardous atmosphere for media.
Stereo Speakers or Televisions Video and audio tape are recorded on magnetic tape so they need to be kept away from all magnetic sources.

I hope these hints are helpful until you get a chance to convert all of your memories.

Please remember if you need any info or have any questions on video, photo, or audio conversion to DVD, CD or digital file please contact us by phone or email.

From Motorcycle Novice to Professional Rider

This months blog is about a video conversion job I did well over a year ago. To date it is still and always will be my favorite conversion job.

When I convert videos I never watch them. I put them on a story board and glance thru them to make sure there was no caps left on lenses, leaving the camera on while walking down the street, the basic wasted tape syndrome. In this case there was roughly 30 tapes of solid motorcycle practice to racing. For someone who grew up on dirt bikes this was fascinating to me and I ended up actually watching a good 75 to 80% of all the videos. I was watching a kid from the age of 5 mature into a professional motocross racer by the time he is 19. This is a 4 minute short of combined highlights of Eric’s rise to success over a 14 year period. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks Bill

Getting 35mm Slides ready for converting

This months Blog is about taking care  of and cleaning slides before converting to Digital file. After you have done your spring cleaning and cleaned out those closets, garages, attics and spare bedrooms and  you come upon your old slides,  it is time to have them transferred to digital file.     2222222222images

Before sending them out to get done to a second party you will want to go thru them and make sure to weed out the doubles and the over blurred. After all you do not want to be charged needlessly for unviewable photos.  I will revert back to a few things I mentioned on my last blog about the easy way to organize your slides and photos.

“Too many times we have heard “we have thousands of photos and do not have time to go thru them and sort them out”. I tell customers that the easy way to prepare is get 300 to 400 slides/photos at a time and while watching TV or sitting out in the backyard soaking and breathing in the springtime, go thru your slides/photos throwing away doubles and sorting  them into folders by years, events, etc. however you want them to be archived.”

Another thing you will want to look for is dirty or moldy slides. You will want to clean them before sending them off. The best way to clean them is with 95% isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, and canned air. Always remember to try not to clean the emulsion side unless absolutely necessary. The emulsion side is the dull side not the glossy side.

If you do not want to send your slides out and have them done and prefer to do them yourself there are a couple of pretty good scanners on the market . Epson and Wolverine both make good and affordable scanners for between $135 to $200. Remember though they do take some time to scan so be sure to make a lot of time in your schedule.

The easy way to organize your photos to convert to digital

Springtime is upon us. That being said, now is the time to clean out those closets, garages, attics and spare bedrooms. When you come upon your old home movie videos , photos, and slides you need to think about having those memories transferred to a playable DVD format, external drive or CD. Don’t forget about those record albums and cassette tapes.  At Mayrath Video Solutions we convert those also.

This blog is about preparing  your photos or slides to be archived or having a video slide show made the easiest way possible.

Too many times we have heard “we have thousands of photos and do not have time to go thru them and sort them out”. I tell customers that the easy way to prepare is get 3 to 400 photos at a time and while watching TV or sitting out in the backyard soaking and breathing in the springtime, go thru your photos throwing away doubles and sorting them into years.

When these 3 to 400 are done we will take them and scan to jpeg, sort them into folders by years, events, etc. however you want them to be archived. We will then upload them in an external Flash drive, 20160307_071330 SD card, CD, or External Hard Drive 20160307_071251.  Now, since we have already saved the folders by years in the drive, the next time you do 3 or 400 you do the same process as before organizing and throwing away what you do not want. Now we just insert the new 3 or 400 jpegs into the existing folders or add folders if needed back into that same drive that we originally loaded the 1st batch of photos. 20160307_091110

We also can make a 15 to 20 minute video slide show presentation complete with music background out of your scanned photos. These are great for Wedding Rehearsal dinner backdrops, family gatherings, birthdays and corporate events.

Preparing your photos or slides this way takes the pressure off of doing this task in a few days and makes it easy for the customer allowing them to take as much time as they like .  Thanks and look for our next blog in a few weeks, Bill
