Lets talk Video and Audio Tape Deterioration :

All video, ( VHS, VHS-c, Betamax, all Sony 8 variations, Mini DV ), and audio tape have a shelf life of around 12 to 15 years. This is if they are stored in a climate controlled environment and especially nowhere near any magnets such as the sizes of magnets used in speakers.
Once they are stored in the attic or garage those years tend to drop a bit because of the excessive changes in temperature.
What this means is the magnetic signal of the tape and the tape material itself start to deteriorate, getting brittle, possibly breaking, causing substantial losses in color, audio, and tracking.
If you have preserved memories on video or audio tape of Special birthdays, family gatherings, Christmas’s , and the list goes on and on, it is time to convert those memoriesvhs-vhsc-to-dvd-300x200 to either DVD, CD, or a Digital file that will allow you to archive your special memories on your computer, thQVQSO4JR
external hard drive, or the cloud for many years to come.

There are a few ways to do this:
1st You can have a professional company do the video to DVD or File conversion for you. There are numerous online companies, but be careful as to how they charge. You can also look into what companies are available in your hometown. (As a matter of fact this is what our company does, please give us a call.)
2nd: You can do it yourself. You will need a working playback deck or video camera, conversion software, and some type of capture device that will connect to your computer.
3rd : A DVD recorder/VHS combo deck. This allows you to transfer your VHS only directly to DVD. This can only be used for VHS or VHS-c if you have the adapter.

Taking care of your Home Media while Stalling to Convert them

Jpeg When you come across your home media, ( video or audio tape, photos, slides, negatives, along with 8 and 16mm film), while cleaning out attics, closets, garages, etc. the best thing to do is right then and there take them to a reputable company and get them converted to DVD or Digital File. But we all know that, “just ain’t gonna happen”. So here are a few hints how to keep your media stored until you get ready to convert them.
IMG_4683

Storing your media under the proper conditions will reduce deterioration of your items. All of your media should be stored in a clean, cool, dark environment. Avoid heat, humidity and light as these will deteriorate your media formats a lot quicker and will make them unviewable.

Great Places in your home to Store your Media:
Closets are low in humidity, have stable temperature, and have virtually no light. IMG_5186

Under a bed will always be dark and cool.

2222222222images
Avoid:
Laundry Room or other small spaces used to store household chemicals.
Attics
are not climate controlled and temperatures tend to fluctuate all day long.
Garage the garage tends to be dirty and has an unregulated temperature also. In addition, automobile exhaust and lawn chemical and fertilizer stored in the garage can create a hazardous atmosphere for media.
Stereo Speakers or Televisions Video and audio tape are recorded on magnetic tape so they need to be kept away from all magnetic sources.

I hope these hints are helpful until you get a chance to convert all of your memories.

From Motorcycle Novice to Professional Rider

This months blog is about a video conversion job I did well over a year ago. To date it is still and always will be my favorite conversion job.

When I convert videos I never watch them. I put them on a story board and glance thru them to make sure there was no caps left on lenses, leaving the camera on while walking down the street, the basic wasted tape syndrome. In this case there was roughly 30 tapes of solid motorcycle practice to racing. For someone who grew up on dirt bikes this was fascinating to me and I ended up actually watching a good 75 to 80% of all the videos. I was watching a kid from the age of 5 mature into a professional motocross racer by the time he is 19. This is a 4 minute short of combined highlights of Eric’s rise to success over a 14 year period. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks Bill

Getting 35mm Slides ready for converting

This months Blog is about taking care  of and cleaning slides before converting to Digital file. After you have done your spring cleaning and cleaned out those closets, garages, attics and spare bedrooms and  you come upon your old slides,  it is time to have them transferred to digital file.     2222222222images

Before sending them out to get done to a second party you will want to go thru them and make sure to weed out the doubles and the over blurred. After all you do not want to be charged needlessly for unviewable photos.  I will revert back to a few things I mentioned on my last blog about the easy way to organize your slides and photos.

“Too many times we have heard “we have thousands of photos and do not have time to go thru them and sort them out”. I tell customers that the easy way to prepare is get 300 to 400 slides/photos at a time and while watching TV or sitting out in the backyard soaking and breathing in the springtime, go thru your slides/photos throwing away doubles and sorting  them into folders by years, events, etc. however you want them to be archived.”

Another thing you will want to look for is dirty or moldy slides. You will want to clean them before sending them off. The best way to clean them is with 95% isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, and canned air. Always remember to try not to clean the emulsion side unless absolutely necessary. The emulsion side is the dull side not the glossy side.

If you do not want to send your slides out and have them done and prefer to do them yourself there are a couple of pretty good scanners on the market . Epson and Wolverine both make good and affordable scanners for between $135 to $200. Remember though they do take some time to scan so be sure to make a lot of time in your schedule.

The easy way to organize your photos to convert to digital

Springtime is upon us. That being said, now is the time to clean out those closets, garages, attics and spare bedrooms. When you come upon your old home movie videos , photos, and slides you need to think about having those memories transferred to a playable DVD format, external drive or CD. Don’t forget about those record albums and cassette tapes.  At Mayrath Video Solutions we convert those also.

This blog is about preparing  your photos or slides to be archived or having a video slide show made the easiest way possible.

Too many times we have heard “we have thousands of photos and do not have time to go thru them and sort them out”. I tell customers that the easy way to prepare is get 3 to 400 photos at a time and while watching TV or sitting out in the backyard soaking and breathing in the springtime, go thru your photos throwing away doubles and sorting them into years.

When these 3 to 400 are done we will take them and scan to jpeg, sort them into folders by years, events, etc. however you want them to be archived. We will then upload them in an external Flash drive, 20160307_071330 SD card, CD, or External Hard Drive 20160307_071251.  Now, since we have already saved the folders by years in the drive, the next time you do 3 or 400 you do the same process as before organizing and throwing away what you do not want. Now we just insert the new 3 or 400 jpegs into the existing folders or add folders if needed back into that same drive that we originally loaded the 1st batch of photos. 20160307_091110

We also can make a 15 to 20 minute video slide show presentation complete with music background out of your scanned photos. These are great for Wedding Rehearsal dinner backdrops, family gatherings, birthdays and corporate events.

Preparing your photos or slides this way takes the pressure off of doing this task in a few days and makes it easy for the customer allowing them to take as much time as they like .  Thanks and look for our next blog in a few weeks, Bill

Using Your Cellphones to Film for the Holidays

To all My Followers:   This will be my last blog for 2015. Instead of pictures and videos of vacations I am just going to give a few helpful video tips. With the Holidays upon us family and friends will all be filming with their Cellphones , Ipads, and some will still bring out their old video cameras for this once a year celebration.  All of these tips you have already heard and possibly remember, so these are just a simple reminder.

#1 Remember that Cellphones do not have any type of stabilization monitor, so do not wave your phone around, try to keep it as still as possible when you are filming. If not when you put it on a 50″ screen it does not take long to start getting nautious.

#2  On any video device after hitting record button wait at least 1 or 2 seconds before speaking. If you ever want to have your film edited this will allow it to be a cleaner transition from scene to scene.

#3 Last Tip: You always want to film in the horizontal position if you are using a Cellphone.

I hope this helps enhance your video experience while you are filming for the holidays and as always if you ever have any questions or need any video, photo,  or audio to DVD or Digital File conversions done, please call , email, or check out our website,

thanks Bill

After all “ We Make Your Home Movies Memorable Again” , that is our business.

May 1975, Motorcycle Journey across Eastern US

To all My Followers:
For the next few Blog posts I will be putting 1 to 3 minute videos out of old vacations taken from when I was a child all the way to with my family now. These will be from all over the world. After all “ We Make Your Home Movies Memorable Again” , that is our business. Now with all this being said:
Welcome to our 7th, installment of our traveling blogs.
The year is 1975, the month is May. My college roommate and I are riding our motorcycles from Nacogdoches,Texas cross country thru Florida, the Cumberland Gap to Washington DC and on to Ohio to visit our other roommate. We are all on the 3 week break before summer school starts.
Ray , my roommate, and I had a lot of strange adventures and I will just touch on a few of the strangest.
Starting out : Ray on a Yamaha 650. Bill on a Water Cooled Suzuki 750, (still my favorite out of the 12 bikes that I have owned). 1975 s_20151108_0002 (1)
1st day we drove all the way to New Orleans. You could definitely tell the difference in highways when we hit Louisiana.1975 s_20151108_0002 (4)
Florida:
The next few days we stopped in Pensacola and Panama City. Ray had all the problems in these 2 locations. We got kicked out of the campground we were staying in because of his loud pipes (we were told “damn bikers”), and then around 9 at night a dog jumped into his head light. When we pulled over the owner of the dog started beating the hell out of him. No worries the dog was fine. 1975 s_20151108_0002 (2)Next morning we told Florida adios and onto DC via Georgia and a pouring rain thru the Cumberland Gap. I do remember the semis going up the steep grades and it was raining so hard they would lose grip and start to slide back at us.IMG mayo_20151110_0001
Washington DC : looked at sights for a day and then off to Columbus,Ohio to visit our other roommate. IMG mayo_20151110_0003
The almost Big Bust:
remember the year is 1975, 2 guys traveling on motorcycles were considered, by rednecks, ( see Florida above) and all highway patrol alike, as outlaw bikers even though they are on Japanese bikes and one was a 2 cycle rice rocket to boot. 1975 s_20151108_0002 (6) So here we are cruising down the Ohio highway and the trooper pulls us over, jumps out of his car, levels his gun at us and tells us to lay face down on the ground. As it turns out at about the same time he pulled us over they actually caught the 2 guys on bikes that had just robbed the store 50 or so miles back, roughly an hour earlier, riding west, same as us, on the same highway that we were on. I hate to think what kind of crap we would have gone thru if they had not caught those guys. Every time I see the movie,” My Cousin Vinnie” it reminds of that moment.
Falling asleep on the Suzuki: on our way back to Texas going thru Missouri Ray honked his horn at me and literally for the last 3 to 5 miles I could not remember anything. We pulled over to get coffee and I asked him why he honked his horn? His response was my “ my mouth was not moving”. Now you have to realize that whenever I ride a motorcycle I am ALWAYS singing. It is something I have always done to concentrate on the road. So for 1800 miles my mouth was always moving except for this last 5 miles or so. Luckily Ray noticed or it would have been a pretty nasty crash at 80mph. Moral of this story is never wear a yellow snow ski face shield.1975 s_20151108_0002 (8)
Well that’s it for the 7th installment. Hope you enjoyed it, and as always if you have any questions or need any Video Slide Shows with music background, VHS or Sony8 video, photo, or audio to DVD, CD, or Digital File conversions done, please call , email, or check out our website. Until our next blog,

Part 2, Midwest Vacation July 1996

To all My Followers:

Welcome to our 6th, Part 2, installment of our traveling blogs.
The year is 1996, the month is July. We are driving from Texas thru St Louis to visit relatives in Chicago and Holland, Michigan. On our way back we took a detour to the Indianopolis Motor Speedway. This blog will be in 2 parts. This is the 2nd part, “Michigan thru Indy”.
The highlights from the 2nd part of our trip. Visiting relatives in Holland ,Michigan. What a beautiful place with great relatives. The highlight for me though of the trip was the visit to the Indianapolis Speedway. The Indy 500 held every Memorial weekend is literally my Super Bowl. It is a must watch with no interruptions , outside noise or chatter. I was absolutely amazed at the length of the track (2miles), when you actually see it in person. TV does it no justice.

Hope you enjoyed this 6th, Part 2, segment video blog. As always if you have any questions or need any Video Slide Shows with music background, VHS or Sony8 video, photo, or audio to DVD, CD, or Digital File conversions done, please call , email, or check out our website,

Some of the highlights are taking the train 40 miles into Chicago from Mary’s cousins house. The 1st time the boys had ever been on a train. We saw the Cubs play at Wrigley Field. The boys were used to going to pro baseball games and always watching a losing effort, so nothing was different this day either ( Can you say Rangers?), and then of course the Sears Tower.

Our Disneyworld Vacation 1998

To all My Followers:
For the next few Blog posts I will be putting 1 to 3 minute videos out of old vacations taken from when I was a child all the way to with my family now. These will be from all over the world. After all “ We Make Your Home Movies Memorable Again” , that is our business. Now with all this being said:
Welcome to the 5th installment of our traveling blogs.
This month we are going back to 1998. We are visiting the state of Florida.
We start at Daytona, then on to Disneyworld and Universal Studios, and we finish the week out with the Kennedy Center at Cape Canaveral.
A few items to note about this vacation:
The track at Daytona is astounding. The high banked oval track is so steep that you can barely walk on it.
My middle son was 12 at the time and was embarrassed to go to the land of the mouse. I bought all the Disney hats for everyone to wear,( that’s the Clark Griswold in me I guess). He was afraid one of his friends might see him, 1500 miles from home. I explained to him if they did, they would not say anything because that meant they were there too.
We all a had a fantastic time and everything went as planned. I have to admit that I was amazed that for a whole week not once, with 3 boys, did we have a Clark Griswold moment.
For some reason we did not take any video on this trip, so we took 100’s of pictures. This video is comprised of only a few of those pictures done at a faster rate of speed than normal for this Slide Show Video along with the music background. Let us make a Slide Show Video for you.
Hope you enjoy this 5th segment video and as always if you have any questions or need any video, photo, or audio to DVD or Digital File conversions done, please call , email, or check out our website,
thanks Bill
